Soy wax vs paraffin candles: what actually matters
Wax decides how long your candle lasts, how much soot it leaves on your wall and how well the fragrance fills a room. Here is the honest comparison, without the marketing.
Burn time
Soy and soy wax have a lower melting point and burn slower, typically giving 15–25% more hours than the same weight of paraffin. A 200g soy candle usually runs 40–50 hours.
Soot and residue
Paraffin is a petroleum by-product and produces visibly more soot, especially with an untrimmed wick. Soy blends burn cleaner, which matters in Indian homes where candles often sit near painted walls and curtains.
Scent throw
Paraffin carries fragrance aggressively at first, but soy wax hold fragrance more evenly across the whole burn because the wax pool stays cooler and larger. For everyday use in rooms of 150–250 sq ft, a well-loaded soy candle wins on consistency.
Cost and sustainability
Soy wax costs more per kilo, which is why handcrafted candles are priced above mass-market paraffin pillars. In exchange you get a renewable, biodegradable wax and a reusable glass vessel.
Frequently asked
- Is soy wax better than paraffin?
- For home use, yes — soy and soy wax burn longer, produce less soot and hold fragrance more evenly. Paraffin is cheaper and throws scent harder in the first hour.
- Do soy candles smell as strong as paraffin?
- A properly fragranced soy candle fills a 150–250 sq ft room. Paraffin peaks faster, soy sustains longer.
- Are scented candles safe indoors?
- Yes, when you trim the wick to 5 mm, burn for two to four hours at a time, keep the candle away from drafts and always keep it in sight.
